Enthiran - the much hyped whopping 200Cr movie from Shankar-Rajni-Maran team is in the news for last two years for all the reasons. The film opened on 1st October worldwide and the buzz is unimaginable. Fans thronging to Cinemas at1am, "Paal Abhishekams" etc. As movie buffs we thought of watching the movie at any cost in the first week itself and the outcome- disappointing.
Even though the movie is made with a Fat Money Cheque the story line is very thin. To the surprise the movie opens without any entry song for Rajini and goes directly into the business. Vaseegaran, the genius scientist creates a Robot -Chitti. Chitti is perfect and it does everything - it can sing, dance, fight, cook but only thing it does not have emotions.So Chitti got rejected in the AIRD inspection and as Vaseegaran's dream to make Chitti use in the Army seems impossible. Then he tries the impossible. He GIVES feelings to Chitti and now the real problem begins. Chitti startsloving Vaseegaran's fiance (played by Aishwarya). Frustrated Vaseegaran breaks Chitti into pieces and throws. The AIRD chief (played by Danny Denzongpa) who rejected Chitti in AIRD inspection takes him and programs him with an additional RED Chip (Terminator Program). Then Chitti starts his business - Termination for his lady love. Then after a hell a lot of action and visuals the movie ends with Vaseegaran bringing down Chitti.
Have you heard this type of story somewhere? May be coincidence:). You can watch this movie in two ways - A Rajini movie - you will be disappointed as lot of things missing for his fans. If you watch this as an ordinary Sci-Fi movie - you will disappointed again as you find this a nonsense movie.
On the positive side, we should appreciate Shankar for his attempt. Trying something different from the usual love story or mass masala. Shankar even tried to cast Rajini in a different style making him a very normal human and giving all the "extra" to the Robot. Computer Graphics deserves a special mention as we have not seen this much in any indian movie not the best though. Art director - Sabu Cyril has done his job well. The lab had an authentic look. All other technical aspects looked very normal. Even Rahman's music, cinematography, editing, looked very ordinary.
For every movie , made in 1Cr or 200Cr, the script is the axis which holds everything around. If you dont hava decent script whatever you give extra the movie will fall flat. Enthiran is an example. Scene creation has taken a beating and we find some annoyingly ridiculous scenes throughout the movie. The comedy scenes with Santhanam and Karunas are disasters. We will be wondering what Shankar is trying to do with these characters. As the movie progresses the scenes with these stars irritates. The supposed to be comedy sequence with mosquitoes annoys you like a 100 mosquito bite. Same with fire rescue scene where the girl suicides for being nude is pathetic and also the delivery scene in hospital which Shankar tried to provide an emotional effect as 3 idiots but utterly failed. The action sequence in the train starts well and ends in an overdose. The cliched narrative style of Shankar makes the movie highly predictable. The much hyped last 30min failed to impress. Always stuffing songs in between scenes makes them show stoppers rather than a visual treat. Even now he is obsessed with exotic locales and group dances for songs (uff!!). The visuals or scenes you create should be used to move the story forward and not as a speed breaker. The highly ridiculous climax court scene (we can see these in all Shankar movies) where everything is decided on the same day (wow!!)
To ascertain this as a Si-Fi Shankar uses scientific words (ip address, Humanoid, Robotics, Artificial Intelligence) and creates some scenes where Rajini working with a screw driver on Robot and doing programming on a computer. Only three people (of which Karunas mainly for changing Robot's dress and under garments) in a most advanced lab ( I dont know where) creates a world class Robot. It takes atleast 1/2 an hour to charge a mobile phone, but this Robot get charged instantly,that too via various sources (Railway High voltage, car battery etc). When chitti was broken into pieces and thrown into garbage, the next day he comes out of rubbish and he himself assembles his broken parts. From where did he recharged after 1 day? Director should have explained this technology (!) or it should been given credit to Dr.Vasi as his another invention ..Ohh!!! Not commenting much on these things and taking these as a fiction..:)
In the acting department we can see a glimpse of Bad Rajini which he always excelled previously before he got lost into his Stardom. Apart from this nothing is impressive. Aishwarya still miserable in most of the scenes and already mentioned about Santhanam and Karunas.
With Enthiran Shankar is focusing only on creating some visuals and trying to put together. He should re-think of his narration style, should work more on scripts. Audience are not dumb any more and never to be under estimated.. He can take lessons from the movies he produce which are far better than he directs.
